Artist Statement:

I begin a ceramic work before knowing how it will end. Hand-carving blocks to print on handmade ceramic forms helps me work through a question or anxiety and arrive at some kind of resolution.

My work requires many slow, repetitive, manual steps (hand-building, hand-carving, hand-printing, firing), but the most demanding part is the sustained attention required to look inward and decide what to bring forward into the work. My recent work explores the tension between cultural and social expectations, and self-determination.

Artist Bio:

Emily B. Yang (b. 1991) is a Brooklyn-based ceramic and block print artist. She started working with ceramics during her time as a graduate student at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Yale School of Architecture, and galleries, museums, and art fairs throughout the United States. Her artistic practice combines ceramics and printmaking, with a particular focus on developing methods of block printing onto ceramic surfaces. This research brought her to India as a 2025–2026 Fulbright Scholar. She has upcoming workshops to share her research at the John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland School of Craft, both in North Carolina, and has previously taught at Parsons School of Design and Harvard University.

Emily has been awarded artist residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Penland School of Craft (twice!). She was awarded the Simone Leigh Award for a residency at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in 2026.

Her creative collaborations include projects with the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Times, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and Welcome to Chinatown.
